This unit offers an introduction to the diverse strategies early Black Bostonians used to challenge racist structures. Centering on the concept of “Uplifting the Race” as it emerged in art and culture, students will examine the foundational histories of Black activism. They will explore how early expressions of social justice were rooted in Black praxis, developed and led by Black individuals confronting the systemic racism embedded in U.S. society.
